The 100 People Project
2021
Due to a variety of reasons, my photography took a back seat to life for several years. It was early 2021 and I was interested in getting back into the hobby. I needed something to motivate my interest again. I remembered The 100 People Project that I did back in 2012. The goal of that project was to capture 100 portraits of people that I met on the street, all between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That project was very successful in spurring in me renewed creativity and passion for the hobby. It worked before, so I figured I would try it again.
The idea behind The 100 People Project began in 2012, as many things in this world do, with a problem. In this particular situation the problem was a creative rut and a lack of focus that I was dealing with as a photographer. I needed some way to inject new creativity into my photos, and to get a sense of focus behind my work. Then a quote came to mind, “If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” If I wanted different results I needed to have a different focus. With that in mind, I turned my attention to something new for me, photographing people, and started The 100 People Project. The goal was simple: capture compelling images of 100 strangers, everyday people going about their everyday lives, over the course of a summer. The result was an adventure of meeting people, the capturing of exciting images, and the opening up of a whole new area of photography.
I set up some basic guidelines behind the project. First, I had to ask the person for permission to take their picture. I didn't allow myself to simply pull out my long 200 mm lens and photograph a person in secret from across the street. Second, after getting the picture I had to start a conversation in order to learn an interesting fact about the person. Third, I had to capture the images between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Lastly, I endeavored to capture in each image some aspect about the person to tell their story.
The results of this year's project are shown below. Like in 2012, the project was very successful in rejuvenating my passion for photography. I was able to capture some neat images, meet some amazing people, and grow as a photographer.

Janet lives in Kansas City, MO and she traveled to Alaska with her husband and another couple to visit for 2 weeks.
The Alaska Railroad line crosses a trestle over Riley Creek near the Riley Creek Campground and the train was scheduled to pass by late in the afternoon. I took the short hike from the campground to scout out an area from which to photograph the train crossing the trestle. While waiting for the train to come, Janet and the others came walking along the trail and stopped to look around for a few minutes. I mentioned to them about the train coming and they got excited and decided to stay and wait. Apparently, Janet's husband is a big fan of trains.

He loves hiking and several years ago started to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. He completed the southern half, but then learned about the Mountain to Sea Trail. This 1,200 mile trail passes through his home town. He decided to stop the AT and prepare for the Mountain to Sea Trail. In his preparation, he found that there were few trail guides, so him and a friend decided to write a trail guide app for the trail. His friend backed out, and so Josh hiked the trail to get the information, and then learned app development so that he could complete the app. It is currently available.

Janette
Walmart parking lot
Searcy, AR
Janette was in the parking lot trying to sell some Blue Heel puppy dogs. She bred Blue Heels previously, but this time it was an accident. Their female dog had 5 puppies. She ended up keeping one and was trying to sell the remaining 4. They already have 3 dogs and a cat. She was asking $150 for the male puppies and $100 for the female puppies.
She was a bit apprehensive at first as to whether she was going to let me take her picture. She eventually agreed to letting me take her picture, but she never seemed completely comfortable.

Steve
Rialto Theater
Searcy, AR Steve works in the city's IT department full time and works in the theater on a part time basis running the concession stand / ticket booth. He also programs the computer once a week that runs the movies and controls the lighting. In the 1980s the theater was closed down and sat vacant for awhile. The city of Searcy ended up buying the theater to keep the historic building from being torn down, but it continued to sit vacant for another 4 years. A retired business man who had retired from running several theaters in the area was approached by the city and was asked to run the theater. The city would maintain the building and not charge rent if the business man would keep the theater operating. In 2015 all theaters in the US had to switch to digital projection, and the business man asked the city for help in making the transition. The city tasked Steve in their IT department with setting up the digital projection since he had previous experience working digital projection for a different movie theater. He has been working for the theater ever since. |

He started for a local newspaper in California as a copy boy. He slowly worked his way to do small photo assignments when the full time photographers were not available. He eventually became a full time photographer and has been working for the Washington Post for 23 years.
As we were talking he mentioned that he would love for someone to walk by in front of the theater to give it a personal touch. I offered to stand in as a model for him.

I had approached Clyde and asked if I could take his picture. He looked at me, paused for a second, and then said "There is something that I need to tell you. I am 90 years old and I have led a good life!". Clyde then proceeded to tell me a lot of his story. He had moved to Metamora with his family in 1937 when his dad took a job in the nearby town of Brookville. He wasa able to negotiate a deal where he kept his union membership even though he was management, and he is still a card carrying member of the union to this day. He eventually moved back to Metamora, where he currently lives. He was married for 67 years, but his wife died 3 years ago.

He is starting to get back into the hobby as a way to help his son be more active outside.
