The Saint Stephen parish was founded in 1867 on this spot and was named after the first martyr in the Church. A building to house the new parish was erected later that year. In 1922 a fire broke out and severely damaged the building. The building was not repairable and work quickly began on a new building. The current church building was dedicated in 1924.
