WHERE ARE THE MEN?
March 17
Several days ago, we had our first meeting where the entire team was able to come together. The trip has a limit of 35 people, and currently there are 34 people. I hadn’t thought at all about the possible demographics of the people on the team, but if asked, I would have probably expected a few more women than men, but that the split would have been close. During an early part of the meeting, I looked around and there were only 3 other men in the group. I was very surprised by this ratio. The entire team is divided into 5 small groups, and I was the only guy in my small group with 6 other women.
I am fine with interacting with the women of the group, but being a married man there are limits to the level of connection that can be made before creating a sense of impropriety. One of the things that I was looking forward to was connecting more deeply with other guys. Guys in general have a tough time building deep connections, but the environment of a trip like this does help guys to open up to one another, be vulnerable, and build connections. I saw this happening during the two Man Camp retreats that I participated in, and I was looking forward to seeing it happen here as well.
I am looking forward to seeing how God uses the dynamics of this group, given the demographics, to speak to me during this trip.
