Cincinnati Water Works
Old River Station
The Old River Station is a part of Cincinnati's Water Works. Construction began in 1898 at the site to produce the next generation water pumping station. Four of the world's largest vertical, triple expansion water pumping steam engines were used in the station, with the combined capacity to pump 30,000,000 gallons of water a day. Housed in a building that went 20 feet below the bed of the Ohio River, the steam engines pumped Cincinnati's water for 57 years, from 1906 to 1963. Although the steam engines have long since been silenced, the station is still used to pump water for the city, this time using electric pumps.
