Go Trip Guatemala
Poverty. Injustice. Unsafe drinking water. Food Insecurity. Human exploitation. The work varies from partner to partner, place to place, but the call is the same: GO, change the world.
A Bit of Background Information
Crossroads Church, located in Cincinnati, OH, sponsors mission trips they call Go Trips to numerous locations around the world. The focus of each trip addresses some social justice issue. This year, my wife, Mary Beth, and I will be participating in our first Go Trip. We are traveling to Guatemala. Guatemala is home to tropical rainforests, mountains, valleys, lowland forests, beaches, and more than 30 active volcanoes. It is also rich with natural resources and its warmer climates are perfect for growing coffee, sugar, fruits, vegetables, and flowers. While there is so much beauty, there is also the presence of systemic poverty. Nearly a third of the entire Guatemalan population is illiterate. Crossroads is partnering with the Cincinnati-based organization Cooperative for Education for work in Guatemala. Co-Ed has been doing powerful work in Guatemala for over 25 years to break the cycle of poverty through education. In that time, they have worked with over a quarter million students and trained thousands of educators around the country. On this trip, the team of volunteers will be working with Co-Ed to help provide educational opportunities to impoverished Guatemalan schoolchildren that help them:
I have set up this page as a way of sharing with others the journey that I am taking as part of this Go Trip. I hope to share the experiences and thoughts I have on this trip and to highlight how God is working through me and the team as we travel to and serve in Guatemala. I will periodically write a blog as a way of sharing. I am an Engineer and not an English major, so I don't promise that my writings will be great pieces of literature. Also, I have never done this style of writing before, so I am boldly stepping out into new territory. I do promise to make them as open and honest as I can. I hope that you enjoy reading them. If you would like to make a contribution towards my trip, you can make a payment at this link here. Thank you! |
